VOLCAN

VOLCAN is derived from the island of Vulcano in Sicily. Similarly to the stratovolcanos that surround the island, the VOLCAN guitar creates a large eruption of sound. It is believed that the Roman God Vulcan opened a door way to his workshop of forging and fire through the peaks of the islands volcanoes. Eruptions were the result of the God’s creation being made.

Principles of Lava:

  • Magma produced at 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit (basalt)

  • Low viscosity

  • Crystalline structure - Glassy

  • Brittle when cooled

Goal:

I wanted to evaluate the effects of pouring lava on to maple boards to understand better the path I should take to integrate these materials into the guitar.

My hopes were to find a way to prevent the molten lava from incinerating the boards by soaking the wood for varying times. If the lava did not burn through, I planned to have the wood and glassy lava create one solid form for the body.

Result:

The lava became brittle and did not adhere to any of the boards.
